Nothing is worse than having an infestation in your home, except having an infestation that you aren’t even aware of. In most cases, an infestation is fairly easy to spot early on, which is always the best time to eradicate it. However, there are the occasional sneaky pests that can take years for homeowners to notice, like the powder post beetle.

Why are these particular beetles so hard to spot, even when they’re rampant throughout the structure of your home? For starters, powder post beetles, unlike most infestations, usually come with the house. By this we mean that the eggs are already prominent in the lumber, or sometimes flooring, that is used to build your home. With a gestation period of 2 to 5 years, it can be some time before you start to notice any symptoms of a problem. Also, it can often be difficult to pinpoint the origination of the problem.

Once the beetles have matured however, there a few ways in which you can identify their presence, including:

  • Tiny holes in wood structures
  • Sawdust coming from holes in wood – this is calls “frass”
  • You can hear the larvae feeding in the wood
  • Holes in wood look fresh, and not the same as surrounding wood

Identifying the appearance of a powder post beetle can be tricky, and it is therefore recommended to always request the opinion of a professional before beginning any treatments. It’s better to be sure before performing the wrong treatment and winding up with prolonged pest problems. Family Pest Solutions can help you identify and eliminate Powder Post Beetle infestations.
