All About Rodents

Rodents can be an extremely pesky unwelcomed houseguest that just won’t seem to quit. These pests can contaminate your food supply, chew through your wires and belongings, leave droppings and urine, and even spread diseases. To top it all off, they reproduce very quickly (most rodents can mate in about 5 weeks after their birth and can birth anywhere from 32 to 56 offspring in a single lifetime) and they can squeeze their way into your home in the tiniest of places.

Some of the most common rodents found in the Capital District are Norway rats, roof rats, and house mice.

Where Do Rodents Come From?

While the obvious answer is ‘the outdoors’, the more complex answer to this question involves their basic survival needs. Rodents are very capable of surviving in nature. However, our homes provide opportunities to be sheltered from some of the harsher realities that are presented to any creature living in the wilderness. A warm shelter, easy access to food and plenty of places to hide are all appealing qualities of your home that would draw a rodent indoors. Some clues that you may be harboring some rodents in your home include:

  • Droppings and feces
  • Plant shreds or paper shreds that are used to nest in
  • Bite holes in food packaging
  • Holes in the wall that weren’t there before, and look like they are from chewing

How Do I Prevent Rodents?

Preventing an infestation can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. Follow these tips to help you avoid having these pests take advantage of your domain:

  • Keep your home sealed to fully separate the outside from the inside
  • If you have any leaf piles or other organic matter laying around your lawn or in close proximity to your house, remove it as rodents like to nest in these
  • Don’t leave food out or in the open – always seal things tightly!

Additionally, with it being just after the holidays, try to keep spaces such as garages, attics and crawl spaces neat and organized despite all of the added shuffling around and use the time that you are in there as an opportunity to check for signs of an infestation.
