Common Signs of Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants tunnel through wood as they build their nest which can cause serious structural damage to a home. It is important to know the signs of a carpenter ant infestation so that you can catch the issue as early as possible.

Let’s start with the profile so that you know who you’re looking for. Carpenter ants are typically black or black and red, around 1/2” to 5/8” long, with 6 legs, antennae and a segmented body.

Common signs of carpenter ants include:

  • The presence of workers or winged swarmers
  • Small openings on the surface of wood
  • Debris (fine wood shavings and parts of dead ants) outside of an opening in wood
  • Rustling sound coming from inside of wood

If you see or hear any of these signs of carpenter ants, it is extremely important to contact an exterminator. The nest will need to be located and a thorough treatment plan will need to be implemented to eradicate these damaging pests.
