Paper Wasps are very common in Upstate NY. These stinging insects are brown in color with yellow markings. They are approximately ¾” long and they have six legs. They get their name from their nest material which is like paper.
Signs of Paper Wasps
The most common signs of paper wasps are the presence of a nest and activity. Paper wasp nests start very small and grow in size over time. These nests are grey in color, almost like the color of an egg carton. Wasps can usually be seen flying to and from their nest with dangling legs.
How Do I Prevent Paper Wasps?
There are several ways to discourage paper wasp activity around your home:
- Seal potential entry points such as torn screens, cracks, and crevices
- Do not leave pet food outside
- Keep garbage cans closed
- Pick up fallen fruit from fruit trees
- Clean up after you eat outside
How Do I Get Rid of Paper Wasps?
If paper wasps have formed a nest, do not approach it. If provoked, paper wasps will sting and protect their nest. It is best to call in your local pest control expert to properly treat and remove the nest.
