Did you see an insect in the Capital Region and you’re not quite sure what it was? Read on for insights:
- Yellow Jackets are medium-sized, black wasps with yellow stripes. They nest anywhere around the home and are commonly found outdoors at the end of summer or fall.
- Fruit Flies are commonly brown and have big red eyes. They can be found around fresh and decomposing fruit, as well as sugary juices and alcohol.
- Stink Bugs have two black dots on a commonly red background behind their head, and keyhole shaped markings on their backs. You may find them in your home and garden.
- Asian Lady Beetles have an M shaped mark on the thorax behind their head and are primarily black and red with white “cheeks” on their head; they eat aphids and are commonly found in the garden.
- Boxelder Bugs are primarily black with red sections along their sunflower-shaped bodies and can be found in basements, attics, or near ceilings.
- Moths are generally earth tones and have a stout and furry appearance. They are generally found in dark locations within the home, like basements, attics and closets.
- Silverfish are shiny silver insects with scales and antennae. They are commonly found in dark, undisturbed corners and under refrigerators.
