Ticks are a common pest here in Upstate New York. These pests can be active anytime the temperature is above freezing. We see a lot of ticks in spring, summer, and fall, but mild winter days can also see some tick activity. Let’s learn more about these unpleasant pests:
- Ticks are arachnids, belonging to the same class as spiders and scorpions
- Some ticks can survive for months or even years without food
- Larval ticks have six legs, while nymphs and adult ticks have eight legs
- Ticks wait on vegetation with their front legs outstretched in hopes that a potential host will brush by that they can latch on to
- After feeding, female ticks can increase their weight by as much as 100x and they can more than double in size before laying eggs
- Ticks can transmit dangerous diseases such as Lyme
- Ticks acquire diseases when feeding and then past them on to subsequent hosts
- There are nearly 900 tick species
