Let’s learn about bed bugs today! Here are five facts about these unpleasant pests:
- Bed Bugs are not invisible
Bed bugs can be easily missed. The eggs are about one millimeter and adult bugs can grow to five millimeters. Bed bugs are good at hiding, so sometimes the only indicator of their existence is their fecal matter. When looking for bed bugs, check crevices and creases in the mattress, or where stitching comes together, or where the mattress meets the headboard.
- Bed Bugs are found in places other than the bed
The bed is the easiest and most convenient place for a bedbug to get all that they need, which is human blood. But because they are nocturnal, they don’t live in the bed full time and can actually be more commonly found in wall voids and other dark places, like cracks and crevices.
- Not everyone shows signs of bed bugs
Roughly 30% of people exhibit signs of being bitten by bed bugs because most people do not have a reaction to their bites. It is difficult to diagnose an issue as bed bugs only due to a rash. Further, the bumps caused by bed bugs can mimic other issues like scabies or chicken pox.
- Bed Bugs don’t transmit disease
While bedbugs carry disease, they do not transmit diseases to humans. They are invasive pests, but they are capable of causing mental health issues like PTSD and delusional parasitosis.
- Bed Bugs are attracted to the carbon dioxide you breathe
The reason bed bugs invade humans’ personal space is that they are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale. This is why they tend to come out in early morning, when people are usually in their deepest REM cycles and breathing the deepest during sleep.
