THE LIFE CYCLE OF A MOSQUITO

Mosquitoes have four stages in their lives. They are listed below:

  • Egg
  • Larva
  • Pupa
  • Adult

Unlike many other insects, mosquito eggs are not laid in mass batches. They are placed one at a time, and sometimes attached to each other so that they may float on water. This is why you often see mosquitoes hiding near water a lot!

Once the eggs hatch, they turn into larva. When a mosquito is in this stage of its life, it molts four times, as it outgrows its skin. Once the larva has its fourth molt, it becomes a pupa.

Pupae don’t actually eat at all, but they are still able to move. During this stage, the mosquito itself is forming, similar to a butterfly in its cocoon. Once a mosquito is ready to become an adult, it breaks out of the pupal skin.

As adults, mosquitoes wait a few days before reproducing or eating. This entire cycle from egg to adult can take anywhere from ten to fourteen days.

WHAT DOES A MOSQUITO LOOK LIKE?

Mosquitoes are flying insects with one pair of wings. They have long legs, a skinny body, and are very small – a lot of times smaller than 16mm long.

HOW TO PREVENT A MOSQUITO INFESTATION

The best way to ever avoid having a mosquito infestation is by thorough prevention. Family Pest Solutions has some tips that may help you prevent mosquitoes from finding your home or property a formidable mating ground.

To start, make sure you don’t have any areas that are allowing water to pool up. As you learned earlier, eggs are laid on water, so stagnant water pools are the perfect way for mosquitoes to begin the reproductive cycle.

If you do have items that cause pooling, but cannot do anything about it, then make sure you at least clean these objects regularly. Some examples are bird baths, pots, and some gardening items.
