- Rodent droppings
Fresh droppings are dark and moist. As they age, they become dry, grey, and crumbly. Most likely found near food packages, in drawers or cupboards, under sinks, hidden areas or along walls, the highest number of droppings can be found where the rodents are feeding or nesting. It is a good practice to inspect the area around any droppings to determine if the infestation is active or new.
- Gnaw marks
Gnaw marks are light in color and become darker as they age on food packaging or walls. The marks can indicate whether you have rats or mice; if you had a mouse infestation but now see larger gnaw marks, you may now have rats.
- Odd pet behavior
Cats, dogs, or pet rats or mice will display odd behavior in areas where outside rodents are present. This will likely occur when rodents have entered a structure. If you see your pet showing interest in areas where they have never shown interest before, it may be a good idea to inspect the area with a flashlight and look for evidence of rats or mice.
- Tracks and runways
If rodents are active in or around the home, they will follow distinct runways and tracks and may leave smudge marks, footprints, urine stains, or droppings, which are usually along walls. To detect these areas, use a flashlight or blacklight. You can also place a light layer of flour or baby powder on the area. With an active infestation, you will see footprints in the powder.
- Nests
Rodents use materials like shredded paper, fabric, or dried plant matter to make their nests. The nest will be hidden but close to food and water sources. If you are finding gnawing or droppings, the nest is nearby and must be removed.
